AEMET's fire danger forecasts issued on 10 August showed Very High to Extreme wildfire risk across northern and central Spain during the eclipse period, requiring public safety measures to run alongside the astronomical event.[6] Authorities distributed eclipse glasses along the path and advised observers to drink water, wear sun protection and avoid open areas under fire danger alerts.
What follows: a remarkable sequence through 2028
The 12 August eclipse is the first of three consecutive major solar eclipses affecting Spain through January 2028, an arrangement the Trío de Eclipses initiative has promoted as a once-in-generations astronomical sequence for the Iberian Peninsula.[2] For those whose view was obscured by the heat haze that thickens over the Ebro Valley in summer, the wait for another chance is shorter than almost anywhere else on Earth.
The second event, on 2 August 2027, crosses southern Spain and offers something categorically different in duration.[4] The maximum central duration along that path is approximately six minutes and 23 seconds, more than three times the totality available in León or Valencia on 12 August. A third eclipse, an annular event, follows on 26 January 2028.
