Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as US ambassador to Greece on 13 October 2026 after the White House asked her to go, following allegations she solicited US$100,000 from a donor to cover personal debt. Guilfoyle denied all allegations and said she would defend her reputation.
White House requests resignation
The White House asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to step down as United States ambassador to Greece on 13 October 2026. White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, at her first briefing on 13 October 2026, announced: "We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well."[1]
President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters before departing on Marine One the same day, offered a brief explanation. "No, she went to Greece, she was doing a good job, but we didn't like what we were reading," Trump said.[2]
Allegations and investigation
House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks on 10 October 2026 called on the State Department's Office of Inspector General to open an investigation into Guilfoyle's conduct, including her dealings with a foreign company and a political donor.[3]
Meeks's press release cited reports alleging Guilfoyle had solicited a US$100,000 payment from donor Eric Deters to cover personal debt before her confirmation hearing, and had sought to conceal the transaction by arranging an anonymous wire transfer.[3] Deters has said he did not make the payment.
Guilfoyle posted to X on 13 October: "These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity."[1] Guilfoyle had been confirmed by the Senate on 18 September 2025, after Trump nominated her in December 2024.
