Kindred ran western blot analysis on saliva and dander samples from both Alfie and Bailey. The blots showed no detectable Can f 1 protein in either pup, while samples from unedited beagles, poodles and goldendoodles all produced clear positive bands.[1] Breeds long marketed as low-allergen alternatives still carry the protein. Alfie and Bailey, on current testing, do not.
The peer-reviewed paper describing the knockout was published in The CRISPR Journal on 5 August 2026.[2] Whole-genome sequencing of both animals found no off-target edits and no integration of foreign DNA, which matters for any regulatory pathway and for the basic welfare of the animals themselves.[1]
The skin-prick test: promising, but limited
Beyond the laboratory, Kindred went one step further. A sensitised individual underwent a skin-prick test using extracts of saliva and dander from the edited pups. The test produced no wheal, meaning no allergic skin reaction, while extracts from non-edited dogs produced a positive response in the same subject.[1]
One subject, one test. Kindred has not claimed otherwise, and a single skin-prick result cannot establish clinical efficacy across the full range of human allergic profiles. No controlled human exposure study has been published. What the test does show is that the absence of Can f 1 in the laboratory translates, in at least one real human reaction, to an absence of the allergic trigger, which is further than any prior breeding programme has managed.
A heritable edit and a long regulatory road
Because the edit was made at the embryonic stage, every cell in Alfie and Bailey carries it, and Kindred says pups bred from two edited dogs will inherit the knockout.[3] "The feeling right now is sort of a mix of relief and awe and gratitude that it worked," said Matt Walker, the company's founder and chief executive, who is allergic to dogs himself.[3]
Regulators will want answers to what widespread propagation of a Can f 1-null line means for the dogs themselves over generations, and what the environmental implications are if large numbers of edited animals enter domestic and potentially wild populations. Kindred confirmed the Can f 1 knockout approach is currently under review by the FDA but gave no commercial timeline.[1] Regulatory pathways for genome-edited companion animals are still taking shape, and the FDA's existing guidance covering genetically engineered animals intended for food signals the scope of safety, health, welfare and environmental assessments that will apply here too.[2]
The ethics of the engineered companion
Arthur Caplan, bioethicist at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, offered the clearest double-edged assessment of what Kindred is building. "It opens the door to a lot more people being able to own pets. On the negative side, it may discourage people from trying to use strays and unwanted animals that are not engineered to be allergy-free," Caplan said.[1]
That tension is real. Between 10 and 20 per cent of the global population is estimated to be allergic to dogs, and allergies rank among the most common reasons people cite for not owning, or surrendering, a pet. Whether wider availability of an allergen-free dog would lead to more animals in homes overall, or simply redirect demand away from shelter animals toward engineered stock, depends heavily on price, availability and how any product is positioned commercially.
CRISPR-edited animals are not a category with established consumer precedent, and how regulators, breeders, veterinarians and the public receive the idea of a gene-edited family pet is a social question that runs well ahead of the science. Alfie and Bailey are proof-of-concept: two healthy beagles confirmed free of the major dog allergen at both the genomic and protein level, with a real human allergic response suppressed in a preliminary test. Kindred has not given a timeline for when, or whether, that result becomes a product available to families.
