TLDR
AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the physical-AI research lab co-founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal worth $8.2 billion. Li joins AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su, as the chipmaker moves to embed frontier model research directly into its hardware roadmap.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
A chipmaker buys a model lab
US chipmaker AMD announced on 28 September 2026 that it had entered a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs. The all-stock transaction is valued at approximately $8.2 billion.[1] The deal is expected to close before the end of 2026. It remains subject to regulatory approvals.[1]
World Labs was founded at the start of 2024 by Fei-Fei Li. She launched it alongside co-founders Ben Mildenhall and Justin Johnson.[3] The lab builds what it calls world models. These systems perceive, generate, reason and interact with both virtual and physical environments.[2] Target applications span robotics, autonomous vehicles and physical AI more broadly.
What AMD is getting
Li joins AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. She will report directly to chair and CEO Lisa Su.[1] That reporting line places a frontier model researcher one step from the person who sets AMD's hardware roadmap.
Su framed the acquisition as a research-to-silicon pipeline problem. "Building the compute platforms for AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving," Su said. "Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring research leadership and model expertise. Together, we can use that insight to develop the hardware, software and systems that will power AI and strengthen the open AI ecosystem."[1]
Li wrote separately on the same day. She pointed to the resource gap that makes a pure research lab hard to sustain at the frontier. "Advancing AI technology requires close collaboration across model research, systems and compute," Li said. "Joining AMD will give our team the resources and engineering depth to accelerate our research and help define the infrastructure needed for AI."[3]
Why it matters for Nvidia's lead
Nvidia currently dominates the AI accelerator market. It powers the bulk of large-scale model training and inference worldwide. AMD has been pushing its Instinct GPU line as an alternative. Hardware alone has not been enough to close the gap. AMD is embedding a physical-AI research team inside its engineering organisation. This gives the company direct visibility into the model demands its chips will need to serve. It shortens the feedback loop between software research and silicon design.
AMD shares fell roughly 4 per cent on the announcement. The reaction reflects the size of the all-stock commitment. The deal remains conditional on regulatory clearance. A close date is targeted before 31 December 2026.[1]
