Cooper Flagg scored 51 points in the Dallas Mavericks' 138-127 loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday night, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to record a 50-point game.

TLDR

Cooper Flagg scored 51 points in the Dallas Mavericks' 138-127 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Friday, becoming the youngest player in NBA history, and first teenager, to record a 50-point game. The 19-year-old, 103-day-old rookie shot 19-of-30 from the field with a career-best six three-pointers and 24 fourth-quarter points. He joins a list of Hall of Famers as the ninth rookie to score 50 in a game.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01Flagg scored 51 points at 19 years, 103 days old, breaking Brandon Jennings' record of 20 years, 52 days set in 2009.
02He shot 19-of-30 from the field with six three-pointers and went 7-of-7 from the free-throw line, adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
03The Mavericks lost 138-127 to Orlando for their 14th consecutive home defeat, dropping to 24-53 on the season.
04Flagg is the ninth rookie in NBA history to score 50 in a game, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Allen Iverson on the list.

Flagg is 19 years, 103 days old. Born December 21, 2006, in Newport, Maine, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Duke broke a record that had stood since November 2009, when Brandon Jennings scored 55 for the Milwaukee Bucks at 20 years, 52 days.

Flagg is the first teenager to reach the mark.

The shooting line

Flagg shot 19-of-30 from the field. He hit six three-pointers, a career best, and went 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. He added 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals across 38 minutes.

Flagg poured in 24 of those 51 points in the fourth quarter. His previous career high was 49 points, set against the Charlotte Hornets on January 29.

Flagg reached 50 on an and-1 turnaround jumper with 2 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the fourth. American Airlines Center, which had watched 13 straight home losses already this season, was on its feet.

"It's always fun getting into that type of mode," Flagg said. "The basket feels big. Your teammates are looking out for you, helping you out."

"But I love to win, so that was my main focus. It's hard for me to fully enjoy myself out there when we're down 20, down 10, down 15 for the majority of the game."

Ejections and a missed call

Head coach Jason Kidd was ejected in the fourth quarter after arguing a non-call. Orlando's Desmond Bane fouled Flagg on a drive. Three officials missed it.

"I think it was warranted. I'm not going to lie," Flagg said of Kidd's reaction. "I talked to Bane after the play. He told me he was intentionally trying to foul me. I honestly don't know how three of them out there didn't see that."

Naji Marshall, the Mavericks forward, was also ejected. Frank Vogel, Kidd's assistant, took over for the final stretch of the fourth quarter.

Vogel briefly pulled Flagg from the game with 3 minutes, 35 seconds left. Dallas fans booed. Vogel put Flagg back on the court shortly after, and the 19-year-old finished the job.

A list of Hall of Famers

Flagg is the ninth rookie in NBA history to score 50 points in a game. The other eight are all Hall of Famers: Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Rick Barry, Elvin Hayes, Earl Monroe, Allen Iverson and Brandon Jennings.

He also joined Michael Jordan as the only players to record multiple 45-point performances during their rookie seasons. Flagg's 49-point outing against Charlotte in January was the first.

"He should be Rookie of the Year," Kidd said. "It's unbelievable. The country is not watching the same thing that we get to watch on a daily basis. He's in rare air. He's with the GOAT when you talk about MJ and what he did in his rookie year, and as a teenager."

Klay Thompson, the Mavericks veteran who has played alongside and against some of the best scorers in NBA history, kept his assessment short.

"It's an honor to be part of history!" Thompson said.

The Rookie of the Year race

Flagg was the top pick in last year's draft. He averages 20.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game this season.

The Rookie of the Year frontrunner remains Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets, the No. 4 pick and Flagg's former roommate at Duke. A recent straw poll of voters had Knueppel receiving 80 first-place votes. Flagg received 20.

"It is what it is," Flagg said of the race. "For me, it's just about getting better every single day."

Performances like Friday's have kept the conversation open. The counting stats favour Knueppel, but Flagg now owns two of the three highest-scoring games by any rookie this season.

Dallas keeps sliding

Friday's result was Dallas's 53rd loss of the season. The Mavericks are 24-53, one of the worst records in the league.

The defeat extended their home losing streak to 14 games, the franchise's longest since the 1993-94 season, when Dallas lost 19 consecutive home games at Reunion Arena.

Flagg scored 51 points in a game his team lost by 11. Orlando had no answer for him individually, but the Mavericks had no answer for the Magic collectively. Four Orlando players scored in double figures.

What comes next

Flagg's season numbers through 77 games sit at 20.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Those are strong numbers for any rookie, especially one playing on a team that has lost more games than all but two franchises this year.

Kidd compared Flagg to Jordan. Flagg compared himself to nobody. When reporters asked about the historical company, he offered a four-word answer and moved on.

"It is what it is."

The Mavericks play the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. Flagg will be 19 years, 105 days old.
