TLDR

Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces say Operation Dawn of Yemen gave them control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, Dhubab district and Mokha port. The Houthis called all claims baseless. Roughly 10 to 12 per cent of global maritime trade passes through the strait, including about 9 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products a day in 2023, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

## A strait, a claim and a denial

Wars produce a recognisable grammar of announcement. Locations fall. Targets are destroyed. Numbers arrive before the dust does. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government produced all three on 5 and 6 October, declaring that its forces had seized the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the Dhubab district and the port of Mokha in an offensive it called Operation Dawn of Yemen. The Houthis, with equivalent confidence, said none of it was true.

Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman Majed al-Nazili said "Giants Brigades and the Nation's Shield forces had taken control of Bab al-Mandeb, while the Dhu Bab area and airport had come under government forces' control, with the road linking Dhu Bab and Mokha cut off and placed under effective fire control."[\[1\]](https://sana.sy/en/international/2348431/?ref=bushletter.com) Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said 100 fighter aircraft participated during the first hours of "Dawn of Yemen," adding that 324 "high-value" targets had been destroyed since the operation began.[\[2\]](https://sana.sy/en/international/2348431/?ref=bushletter.com)

A Houthi military source cited by the movement's Saba news agency dismissed the government's claims as "baseless."[\[3\]](https://www.aa.com.tr/en/world/yemeni-forces-seize-dhubab-strategic-sites-near-bab-el-mandeb-army-says/4078179?ref=bushletter.com) That single word does considerable work in a conflict where independent journalists cannot freely enter the theatre and satellite imagery takes days to interpret. Neither set of claims has been independently verified.

## Why the strait concentrates minds

The Bab el-Mandeb is one of those places that matters structurally rather than sentimentally. Connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, it carries roughly 10 to 12 per cent of global maritime trade, including about 9 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products a day in 2023 according to the US Energy Information Administration, along with containers and vehicles.[\[4\]](unctad.org/system/files/official-document/rmt2024%5Fen.pdf) When it functions, it is invisible. When it does not, the consequences travel far.

Since 19 November 2023, the International Maritime Organisation has recorded 67 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.[\[5\]](https://www.imo.org/en/mediacentre/Pages/Red%20Sea%20Incidents%20Report%20for%20Member%20States%2012%2009%202024.pdf?ref=bushletter.com) Shipping companies rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, adding thousands of nautical miles and weeks to voyage times, costs that found their way into freight rates and, eventually, into prices at the bowser. For Australia, which imports most of its refined fuel, any sustained closure of the strait feeds through to the Singapore benchmark prices that set what motorists pay at the pump.[\[6\]](https://www.accc.gov.au/system/files/weekly-fuel-price-monitoring-report-14-august-2026.pdf?ref=bushletter.com)

## The human cost moving westward

While governments count targets and the shipping industry counts nautical miles, the International Organisation for Migration has been counting people. More than 85,000 have been displaced inside Yemen's western coastal areas as fighting has escalated, with over 2,000 fleeing by sea to Djibouti.[\[7\]](https://yemen.un.org/ar/322641-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%86%D8%B8%D9%85%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%84%D9%87%D8%AC%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%A3%D9%83%D8%AB%D8%B1-%D9%85%D9%86-85000-%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%B2%D8%AD-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AE%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%AC%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%8C-%D9%882000-%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%A7-%D8%A5%D9%84%D9%89?ref=bushletter.com) The crossing to Djibouti, roughly 30 kilometres at its narrowest point, passes directly through the waters both sides now claim to control.

The pattern here is familiar enough: a government offensive produces large numbers and named locations, the opposing force denies each claim in turn, and months later analysts piece together what actually changed hands and when. The IOM's displacement figures carry the stubborn weight of people rather than press releases.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01Giants Brigades and Nation's Shield forces reportedly seized Bab el-Mandeb, Dhubab and Mokha port, spokesman Majed al-Nazili said.

02Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said 100 aircraft flew in the opening hours and 324 targets were destroyed.

03A Houthi military source cited by Saba news agency called every government advance claim baseless and unverifiable.

04Over 85,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen's western coast, with more than 2,000 fleeing by sea to Djibouti.

05Australia imports most of its refined fuel, so a sustained closure of the strait would feed through to pump prices via the Singapore benchmarks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Bab el-Mandeb strait and why does it matter?

The Bab el-Mandeb strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. In 2023 it handled 8.7 per cent of global seaborne trade, including major flows of crude oil, refined fuel, containers and vehicles. Control of the strait affects global shipping routes and fuel prices.

Have the Yemeni government's claims been independently verified?

No. Neither the government's claims of control over Bab el-Mandeb, Dhubab and Mokha port, nor the Houthi denial, has been independently verified. Independent journalists cannot freely access the conflict zone.

How does the fighting affect Australian fuel prices?

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in August 2026 that disruptions to oil flows through the Bab el-Mandeb were influencing the international refined fuel benchmarks that feed into Australian petrol and diesel prices.
