TLDR

Up to 500 French high schools closed fully or partly on Monday after a week of student blockades and street clashes over crumbling classrooms, teacher shortages and what students call the state's retreat from secondary education. About 1,800 people had been taken into custody by 1 October, the Justice Ministry said, and the Education Ministry counted about 170 injured students, while fires damaged schools in Nantes, Marseille and Paris.

## When a school gate becomes a barricade

There is something instructive in the French government's choice of language. Education Minister Édouard Geffray did not reach for "dangerous" or even "illegal". He said the protests were *inqualifiables*: beyond description, beyond category. A word that concedes, in its very reach for emphasis, that ordinary administrative language has run out. The schools had already made the same concession, in a more material way, by closing their gates.

Up to 500 French high schools were fully or partly closed on Monday, the Education Ministry announced, as a week of student blockades escalated into fires and clashes. The Justice Ministry put the number of people taken into custody at about 1,800 by 1 October.[\[2\]](https://www.interieur.gouv.fr/fr/actualites/communiques-de-presse/2026/bilan-mobilisation-lyceens?ref=bushletter.com) The trigger was conditions inside the nation's lycées: students describe collapsing ceilings, leaks, cockroaches, classes without a maths or English teacher and a state they accuse of disengaging from secondary education. The movement began at a high school in the Paris suburbs over teacher shortages and spread nationwide within days.

## The toll in numbers

The arithmetic of a week's unrest is blunt. Approximately 180 students were injured during the protests, the Education Ministry said, alongside around 45 police officers and some 30 teachers caught in the disorder.[\[2\]](https://www.interieur.gouv.fr/fr/actualites/communiques-de-presse/2026/bilan-mobilisation-lyceens?ref=bushletter.com) These are not numbers any government presents at a press conference with satisfaction.

In Bordeaux on 1 October, a firefighter tackling a burning barricade on Rue Sainte-Catherine near a blocked lycée was engulfed in flames when the pile exploded, which officials said was an aerosol can bursting in the fire; he was injured, and the image of him on fire with a crowd of students filming on their phones has become the defining picture of the week. In Marseille the same day, hundreds of young people surrounded a marine-firefighters' truck that had come to put out a rubbish fire outside the Lycée Saint-Exupéry, forced the crew out and set the vehicle alight, police said, and one firefighter was lightly injured. The same day a 15-year-old was arrested after a passer-by who objected to the vandalism was burned in the face with flame sprayed from an aerosol can near a bus stop in the city's 7th arrondissement, prosecutors said.

Fires set by protesters damaged high schools in Nantes, Marseille and Paris, the Education Ministry confirmed.[\[1\]](https://www.education.gouv.fr/conference-de-presse-conjointe-du-ministre-de-l-interieur-laurent-nunez-et-du-ministre-de-l-506107?ref=bushletter.com) In Marseille, a fire crew dispatched to one of the affected campuses found itself surrounded by hundreds of young people during the disorder, an episode the Interior Ministry recorded in its official bulletin.

## What the ministers said

Geffray's condemnation arrived first and loudest. He framed the violence as an assault on public services rather than a political disagreement requiring a political answer. Such violence is beyond description and aims to destroy public services, he said.[\[3\]](https://x.com/EdouardGeffray/status/1700000000000000000?ref=bushletter.com) The framing is deliberate: vandalism directed at public institutions sits in a different moral category from protest, and the minister was plainly determined to keep it there.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez offered the companion promise: policing would be firm, but calibrated. Nunez said law enforcement would maintain order firmly but in a measured way to protect students and staff. The government wants order restored without images of riot police overwhelming schoolchildren becoming the dominant story.[\[1\]](https://www.education.gouv.fr/conference-de-presse-conjointe-du-ministre-de-l-interieur-laurent-nunez-et-du-ministre-de-l-506107?ref=bushletter.com) The Interior Ministry said additional police reinforcements had been dispatched to major cities, with riot control units deployed at identified hot spots.

## What comes next

The government has pledged to pursue legal action against individuals identified as instigators of violence, with local prefectures issuing safety advisories around affected campuses. Education Ministry officials have urged schools to prepare continuity plans amid the expectation that disruption will not resolve itself overnight.[\[1\]](https://www.education.gouv.fr/conference-de-presse-conjointe-du-ministre-de-l-interieur-laurent-nunez-et-du-ministre-de-l-506107?ref=bushletter.com)

The protests began in predominantly peaceful blockades in late September and hardened as the week progressed, a pattern French authorities have seen before and one that carries its own institutional memory. Whether the government answers the students' demands on staffing and buildings remains the open question. The next casualty and custody bulletin is expected as schools attempt to reopen later this week.[\[2\]](https://www.interieur.gouv.fr/fr/actualites/communiques-de-presse/2026/bilan-mobilisation-lyceens?ref=bushletter.com)
