TLDR

Star Entertainment's FY26 accounts carry a formal going-concern warning from both directors and auditors, overshadowing a $307.3 million net loss. More than 7,000 workers across NSW and Queensland face uncertainty as the company leans on a $300 million equity injection and $267 million cash on hand.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01Both auditors and directors formally flagged material uncertainties about Star's ability to survive in the 31 August 2026 ASX filing.

02Star recorded a $307.3 million statutory net loss on revenue of $1,306.2 million, up just 0.5% year-on-year.

03A $300 million Bally's equity injection and $267 million cash on hand are the company's said buffers against collapse.

04Over 7,000 employees across NSW and Queensland face direct exposure if the going-concern risk materialises.

05The NSW Independent Casino Commission issued $10 million in fines and a $5 million enforceable undertaking against The Star Sydney on 1 June 2026.

The sharpest line in Star Entertainment's FY26 accounts, released to the ASX on 31 August 2026, does not appear near the loss figure. It sits in Note G, page 122 of the Appendix 4E Preliminary Final Report: "there continues to be material uncertainties in existence that cast significant doubt as to the Group's ability to remain a going concern."[\[1\]](https://announcements.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20260831/pdf/2A1693690.pdf?ref=bushletter.com) Directors wrote that. Then the auditors repeated it on page 131, in a formal Emphasis of Matter: "material uncertainties that cast significant doubt on the Group's ability to continue as a going concern."[\[1\]](https://announcements.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20260831/pdf/2A1693690.pdf?ref=bushletter.com)

The statutory net loss after tax of $307.3 million arrives in that context, not the other way around.[\[1\]](https://announcements.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20260831/pdf/2A1693690.pdf?ref=bushletter.com) Revenue from ordinary activities came in at $1,306.2 million, a 0.5% increase on the prior year, a number management has pointed to as evidence of an operational turn.[\[1\]](https://announcements.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20260831/pdf/2A1693690.pdf?ref=bushletter.com) The loss itself narrowed 28.2% year-on-year, and taken together both figures suggest a company moving in the right direction; set alongside a going-concern flag signed off by both the board and its auditors, they describe something more complicated.

## Who carries the risk

Star Entertainment operates The Star Sydney, The Star Gold Coast and manages The Star Brisbane, employing over 7,000 people across NSW and Queensland. Those workers, and the gaming revenues both state governments draw from the group's licences, represent the most direct exposure if the going-concern risk hardens into something worse. Star held $267 million in cash and cash equivalents at 30 June 2026, backed by a $300 million equity investment from Bally's Corporation and Investment Holdings completed in November 2025.[\[2\]](https://www.starentertainmentgroup.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/31-08-2026-Media-Release-FY26-Financial-Results.pdf?ref=bushletter.com) A USD 390 million debt refinancing was also completed during FY26, and the company is pointing to those transactions as evidence it can trade through.

Group Chief Financial Officer H. C. Charles Diao said the company had made meaningful progress, with various financing and strategic transactions, along with critical operational improvements implemented by new leadership, leaving The Star materially improved in its financial position and risk posture. Diao said the company sees clear progress in effecting the operational turnaround and is confident that it has begun the process of recovery towards sustainable and profitable financial performance from a few years past.[\[2\]](https://www.starentertainmentgroup.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/31-08-2026-Media-Release-FY26-Financial-Results.pdf?ref=bushletter.com) The auditor's Emphasis of Matter is worth reading alongside that statement; the auditors confirmed their opinion was unmodified, meaning the accounts are clean, but the going-concern flag stands regardless.[\[1\]](https://announcements.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20260831/pdf/2A1693690.pdf?ref=bushletter.com)

## The regulator's qualified confidence

The NSW Independent Casino Commission issued The Star Sydney $10 million in fines and an enforceable undertaking requiring a further $5 million set aside for financial crime risk management technology, announced on 2 June 2026, for conduct spanning December 2018 to September 2025.[\[3\]](https://www.nicc.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media-releases/nicc-issues-star-sydney-10-million-fines-and-enforceable-undertaking?ref=bushletter.com) Those penalties land on a balance sheet already carrying a going-concern qualification. Group Chief Executive Bruce Mathieson Jnr said the NICC had allowed the company to pay progressively until 30 June 2027, and said the conduct occurred between December 2018 and September 2025 and prior to the commencement of the current leadership.[\[4\]](https://www.starentertainmentgroup.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/ASX-Announcement-01-06-2026-The-Star-Sydney-%E2%80%93-Penalties-for-Historical-Financial-Crime-Risk-Matters.pdf?ref=bushletter.com)

NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford acknowledged the improvement under new management while confirming the penalties. Crawford said the NICC has seen considerable progress at The Star under their new leadership, and is confident that the revised remediation workstreams, the expertise of Bally's Corporation and the technological uplift that has taken place since these breaches occurred have made a materially significant improvement in The Star's remediation progress.[\[3\]](https://www.nicc.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media-releases/nicc-issues-star-sydney-10-million-fines-and-enforceable-undertaking?ref=bushletter.com) A regulator expressing confidence in progress while simultaneously issuing $15 million in penalties is, at minimum, a measure of how much ground remains to be covered, with the company's next formal test coming through ongoing NICC remediation reporting.
