TLDR

University of Melbourne spinout R2Crete has secured $750,000 in pre-seed funding from the Genesis Pre-Seed Fund and Uniseed to build a pilot plant for its waste-concrete recycling technology. The company claims its patented process recovers up to 75 per cent of cement from waste concrete and halves carbon emissions. The pilot plant is due for completion by end of 2026, with field trials starting in early 2027.

## The raise and the backers

R2Crete has raised $750,000 in pre-seed funding, split between the University of Melbourne's Genesis Pre-Seed Fund and commercialisation investor Uniseed.[\[1\]](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/melbourne-uni-concrete-recycling-spinout-cements-750000-pre-seed/?ref=bushletter.com) The Genesis fund was established in June 2022 with $15 million to back early-stage university startups. It sits inside a broader $115 million investment initiative from the University of Melbourne.[\[2\]](https://www.unimelb.edu.au/newsroom/news/2022/june/new-%24115m-investment-funds-to-accelerate-research-discoveries-from-idea-to-reality?ref=bushletter.com)

Uniseed investment manager Jeffrey Bourne said R2Crete had earned its backing. "We believe R2Crete is well-positioned to become a leader in sustainable construction materials," Bourne said.[\[1\]](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/melbourne-uni-concrete-recycling-spinout-cements-750000-pre-seed/?ref=bushletter.com) Managing director Warren Overton said the funding pays for the next stage. "Securing this funding from Genesis and Uniseed is a pivotal moment for R2Crete. It enables us to move from laboratory success to real-world commercial deployment," Overton said.[\[1\]](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/melbourne-uni-concrete-recycling-spinout-cements-750000-pre-seed/?ref=bushletter.com)

## What the technology does

R2Crete was founded by Dr Tuan Nguyen, Overton and Professor Mahdi Miri Disfani, and registered as an Australian private company on 28 May 2025.[\[3\]](https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?id=55686884560&ref=bushletter.com) The patented process takes waste concrete from demolition and construction sites. It produces two outputs: clean aggregates and a supplementary cementitious material that can substitute for conventional cement.[\[4\]](https://r2crete.com.au/?ref=bushletter.com)

The company claims its process recovers up to 75 per cent of the cement embedded in waste concrete. It also claims a 50 per cent cut in carbon emissions compared with producing virgin cement.[\[1\]](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/melbourne-uni-concrete-recycling-spinout-cements-750000-pre-seed/?ref=bushletter.com) Those figures come from the company's own research and have not been independently verified at commercial scale.

R2Crete's own data puts global waste concrete generation at roughly 2 billion tonnes a year, driven by construction and demolition activity worldwide.[\[4\]](https://r2crete.com.au/?ref=bushletter.com) Australia generates an estimated 7 million tonnes annually. Most of it is downcycled into low-grade road base or sent to landfill rather than returned to the supply chain as usable material.[\[1\]](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/melbourne-uni-concrete-recycling-spinout-cements-750000-pre-seed/?ref=bushletter.com)

## The pilot plant and what has to be proven

Construction of the pilot plant is already under way, funded by the $750,000 raise.[\[1\]](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/melbourne-uni-concrete-recycling-spinout-cements-750000-pre-seed/?ref=bushletter.com) Completion is targeted by end of 2026, after which R2Crete moves into field trials scheduled for early 2027\. Those trials are the first time the company's performance claims get tested at commercial scale, outside controlled laboratory conditions.

The 75 per cent cement recovery rate and the 50 per cent emissions reduction are the two figures the construction industry will scrutinise. Laboratory results frequently compress at scale, and the pilot is R2Crete's opportunity to confirm its numbers hold under real operating conditions. R2Crete registered its ABN in May 2025 and will reach commercial-scale testing by the first quarter of 2027 if its construction timeline holds.[\[3\]](https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?id=55686884560&ref=bushletter.com)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does R2Crete's technology actually produce?

The patented process converts waste concrete into two materials: clean aggregates that can be reused in construction, and a supplementary cementitious material that substitutes for conventional cement in new concrete mixes.

Who invested in R2Crete's pre-seed round?

The $750,000 pre-seed round came from two investors: the University of Melbourne's Genesis Pre-Seed Fund, a $15 million vehicle set up in 2022 to back early-stage university spinouts, and Uniseed, a university commercialisation fund.

When will R2Crete's pilot plant be operational?

Construction is currently under way, with completion targeted by the end of 2026\. Field trials are scheduled to begin in early 2027.

Have R2Crete's performance claims been independently verified?

The claims of 75 per cent cement recovery and 50 per cent emissions reduction come from the company's own laboratory research. The pilot plant, due for completion by end of 2026, is the first test of those figures at commercial scale.
