TLDR

Turning Point USA has grown to one million student activists and 1,500 college chapters in the year since Charlie Kirk was shot dead at Utah Valley University. The accused killer, Tyler James Robinson, awaits trial after a judge ruled the evidence against him overwhelming, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01Turning Point USA's college chapters rose 64 per cent to 1,500 in the year after Kirk's killing.

02Over 3,500 high school clubs now operate under the Club America program, up 180 per cent.

03Judge Tony Graf found the evidence against Robinson 'overwhelming and devastating' at the preliminary hearing.

04Erika Kirk leads the organisation as chief executive and board chair following her husband's assassination.

05Close to a third of students surveyed by FIRE still accept violence to stop a campus speaker in rare cases.

## One year on, a movement and a murder charge

There is something ritually uncomfortable about the anniversary of a political killing. The movement gathers, the numbers are recited, the growth charts are displayed, and somewhere, separately, a court prepares for a capital murder trial. Both things happen at once.

A year after Charlie Kirk was shot during an event at Utah Valley University and later pronounced dead at Timpanogos Regional Hospital on 10 September 2025, Turning Point USA is a measurably larger organisation than the one he left behind.[\[1\]](https://dps.utah.gov/press-releases/updates-on-charlie-kirk-shooting-at-uvu/?ref=bushletter.com) Whether that growth is cause, consequence or coincidence is a question the anniversary invites but does not answer.

## The numbers

Turning Point USA now reports more than one million student activists across its National Field Program, with over 1,500 college chapters and 3,500 high school clubs operating under the Club America program nationwide as of autumn 2026.[\[2\]](https://tpusa.com/memberrenewal/?ref=bushletter.com) The college chapter count represents a 64 per cent increase on the figure held at the time of Kirk's death; the high school program has grown by 180 per cent over the same period.

Erika Kirk, named chief executive and board chair following her husband's assassination, has overseen the expansion through campus tours, conferences and what the organisation describes as grassroots field programs.[\[3\]](https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/how-turning-point-usa-continues-charlie-kirks-mission?ref=bushletter.com) TPUSA's own materials frame the growth as tribute, and the organisation has always been comfortable with that framing.

## The case against Robinson

Tyler James Robinson, 23, entered a not-guilty plea after prosecutors charged him with aggravated murder in the capital degree. In August 2026, Judge Tony Graf of Utah's Fourth Judicial District Court bound Robinson over for trial, having reviewed the evidence at a preliminary hearing, and Graf was unsparing in his assessment.

"The evidence and the clues the defendant left behind that day and his actions over the next day or so amount to overwhelming and devastating proof of his guilt," Graf said.[\[4\]](https://www.rev.com/transcripts/ut-v-tyler-robinson-final-preliminary-hearing?ref=bushletter.com) The State of Utah filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty on the aggravated murder charge, setting the stage for a trial that will test the state's capital sentencing standards.[\[5\]](https://atty.utahcounty.gov/cms/uploads/TJR%5FInformation%5F49872215e3.pdf?ref=bushletter.com)

## Political response and the campus speech climate

Speaking at a Republican National Committee event in Dallas on 9 September 2026, President Donald Trump addressed the killing directly. Trump told the audience that the murder itself and the number of people who made excuses for it or cheered for it shocked millions of Americans, and he characterised that reaction as briefly revealing the radical left's true nature.[\[6\]](https://rollcall.com/factbase/trump/transcript/donald-trump-speech-rnc-midterm-convention-dallas-september-9-2026/?ref=bushletter.com)

That characterisation sits against a more complicated data picture. A Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression survey of nearly 63,000 students found close to a third still considered violence to stop a campus speaker acceptable in at least rare cases, down from 34 per cent the previous year.[\[7\]](https://www.fire.org/news/2027-college-free-speech-rankings-kirk-murder-adds-another-difficult-topic-dismal-climate?ref=bushletter.com) The movement Kirk built has doubled in a year; the conditions that made him a target have, by that measure, diminished only slightly.

A trial date for Robinson had not been set publicly as of this report. The Utah County Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case.
